EIGHTH
YEAR OF CONSERVATION AWARD FOR LINCOLNSHIRE
P Needham & Son
are the 2011 Winners
of this Prestigious Trophy

P Needham & Son of Coleby are the 2011 winners.
The Jas. Martin & Co. Lincolnshire
Grey Partridge Trophy was awarded for the eighth time at 11am
on the CLA stand at the Lincolnshire Show on Wednesday 22nd June.
In 2011, 41 participating estates,
farms and shoots throughout Lincolnshire submitted spring counts of
English (or Grey) Partridges to the Game and Wildlife Conservation
Trust and thus became eligible to win the Trophy. These were then
short-listed to three finalists which were inspected by the three
judges: Alex Butler, Regional Advisor for the Game and Wildlife
Conservation Trust, Graham Rowles Nicholson from Coates Hall Farm
(last year’s winner) and Dermot Spurrier, Partner of Jas. Martin &
Co., the county based land agents who are sponsoring the
competition.
Following the inspections the
judges agreed unanimously that this year’s winner should be – P
Needham & Son of Manor Farm Coleby, represented by Mr Gerald
Needham. The Trophy - an English Partridge modelled in silver -
together with the certificates for the two runners-up were
presented by the President of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society,
Professor David Chiddick.

The runners-up are, in no
particular order, Ian Clark of Manor Farm, Great Sturton, and
Stewart Thorpe of Ryland Grange Farm, Fulbeck Heath.
The Jas Martin & Co. Lincolnshire
Grey Partridge Trophy is awarded annually to recognise the estate
farm or shoot that has done the most for grey partridges and to
encourage more farmers and land owners to actively conserve grey
partridges and to count the bird. Whilst P Needham & Son are the
winners of the trophy it was decided by the judges that a special
award should be made to Stewart Thorpe in recognition of his
outstanding efforts in organising the South Lincolnshire Grey
Partridge Group. A bronze statue of a pair of partridges in flight
was presented to him by Professor David Chiddick.
